Patterns of Protocols are introduced for describing communication across networks, providing conceptual patterns for behaviors of protocols and common terminology for their operations. The two basic structural patterns are Protocol-ProviderPeer-Pair-Packet and User-Provider-Agent, orthogonal to one another. The first views protocols in a common manner related to instances at each node, addresses of their peers, linked pairs of sender and receiver for the communication, and packets which they send and receive. The second sees each provider as nested between a user for which it provides services and an agent which provides services for it. The two basic behavioral patterns are Forward-Fill-Finish and Route-Resolve-Relay, which respectively consider what a provider does with an arriving packet, writing to an appropriate user or sending on the network through an appropriate agent, and in the latter case choosing an agent and addressing suited to get it to the next provider.
